First Media Studies Blog!

I believe that media is outrageously important in my life. Outrageous because my entire day is basically consumed by parts of the media. When I'm not doing homework (although I usually multitask with music or TV) I'm watching my favorite TV shows, going to see the latest awesome looking movie, reading Naruto manga, watching crazy internet videos, I could go on for days. I can easily say that without media and media forms my days would be filled with sadness and despair. :(

Sassy Gay Friend in Hamlet: Example of a crazy internet video! (p.s. there is a minor swear word at the end... just mind censor it!)

Three types of media I am passionate about:
Television, because I have never bonded with my siblings over anything else then television. There is also such a grand variety of programming that it could entertain any type of person for days.

One of my favourite TV shows, a perfect mix of talk show humour and video games.

Video games, because whether I'm playing multiplayer with my friends and siblings or online by myself, it's always super fun. Video games are a very good stress reliever, allowing me to enter some other world different then this one just for a little bit.

Music is my last choice, it's so easy for music to mimic any type of emotion and feeling and that's what's most amazing about it. When i'm walking or just sitting around doing anything music is always playing. I'm also looking to pursue a career in music so it's been a very important staple in my life for a long time.

Modern Culture:

Today's modern culture is revolutionary. Things are constantly changing and usually for the better. Internet allows us to access a multitude of information (or provide hours of entertainment). TV can now be rewound, recorded and watched at a later time without having to use a VCR! (How crazy is that?) I'm not quite sure I dislike any new elements of the media used today, I have my iTouch which lets me check my facebook, google, and read up on twitter (although I still think reading up on celebrity postings is weird) and it couldn't be more useful. Sure with cell phones and everything it gets annoying how easily anyone can get a hold of you, but it comes in handy sometimes too. Other then researching for homework and assignments, i use the media mostly for entertainment and keeping up with world events (about 90% entertainment though).

Desert Island Choices:

If it were MY decision, i'd bring an entire functioning city with me to a desert island. But this assignment calls for about 3 seperate media forms instead, so that's what I'm going to do.

First, I'm going to go with Music and bring the entire New York Philharmonic with me. They would play for me as I pleased, and provide ongoing entertainment while I scavenged for food, tried to build a hut, and make fire with sticks and rocks. I love orchestral music and most will agree that the best way to listen to it is live. Of course i'd also require a large amphitheatre for optimum acoustics, but being stuck on a desert island has left me with a lot of time on my hands.

Second, I'll be choosing Television. For this i'll require a TV, good thing electricity is easy to find on a desert island. I wouldn't have cable (because asking for that would be ridiculous) but i'd have all the seasons of American Dad to date. It's a surprisingly funny TV show that I rarely ever catch but I love every minute of it. Also, because I never watch it i haven't seen all the episodes, which is even better! It will take me a while to get though it, and keep my mind off the though of being trapped on a desert island with a bunch of musicians.

Third, I'd bring my computer, and assuming I'd have internet i would also bring World of Warcraft. This is probably my favorite game to play by myself, or even with my family (yes, my family plays WoW together). I don't play it all the time but when I do it's lots of fun. Activities are endless within the game and hours begin to pass by like seconds during gameplay. Which is ideal when deserted.

So there it is, why media is important to me. What types of media are important to me. What I think about media. And desert island choices, which are always interesting and fun!

Meagan!
